The Langendorff heart (isolated perfused heart) assay allows the examination of cardiac contratile strengh, heart rate and ECG without the complications of intact animal such as the neuronal and hormonal effects. Drugs to be tested can be directly added into the perfusate and the effect of the drugs on the heart can be observed subsequently. This assay is one of the in vitro tests recommended by ICH to evaluate drug's preclinical cardiac safety.
